For forty-nine
years, the Mt. Lebanon-based, 90-voice South Hills Chorale has been entertaining
thousands of persons and hundreds of organizations and facilities in Pittsburgh
and Western Pennsylvania. Each concert season the Chorale performs two major
shows in December and May and ten to twenty community shows for meetings,
conventions, religious, and social groups. The 40-voice South Hills Chorale Mixed Ensemble performs in space-restricted venues.
Their community mission includes on-site
performances at facilities serving elderly and challenged persons and
performances with high school and college choral and instrumental groups. Recently they
have performed with the Slippery Rock University Men's and Women's Ensembles, the Keystone Oaks Steel Band, and the Mt. Lebanon High School Percussion Ensemble.
In 1966 Henry D. Monsch Jr. (Hank) became music
director, and his innovative leadership has continued for forty-two years.
During this time, the Chorale has shared the stage with many well-known
Pittsburgh soloists and instrumental groups. Notable performances include being
the guest chorus in a Civic Light Opera performance of KISMET; performing in an
Andy Williams Christmas Show in Pittsburgh; and entertaining in Sharon,
Brooksville, and Titusville as part as Pittsburgh Foundation's "Pittsburgh
Arts on Tour."
The South Hills Chorale has introduced a scholarship
program for high school juniors and seniors who show talent in choral music to give them
an opportunity to rehearse and perform with us. The scholarship program offers memberships
to students free of charge, the music is also free, but the costume charges are the students' responsibility. In addition to the scholarship program, the South Hills Chorale are participants with TIX FOR TEACHERS.
The Chorale's programming includes American
classics, Broadway, pops, gospel, spirituals, old favorites, new compositions,
sacred, and holiday works - there is a music style for everyone at a
Chorale show.
A major factor contributing to the Chorale's success is the
dedication of their professional staff, board, and singing members. More than
half the members have been participating for ten or more years.
